Skiing & Snowboarding
Mt. Ruapehu is home to New Zealand’s two largest ski areas, with 1,800 hectacres of serious room to play. With just one Mt. Ruapehu lift pass you receive access to both of the ski fields, Whakapapa and Turoa.
Situated on the region’s most active volcano Mt. Ruapehu, the Turoa and Whakapapa ski fields not only offer world-class learner’s facilities but also the secret power stashes, steep chutes, and snow-filled basins guaranteed to test the most adventurous of back country riders.

On a clear day a hike to the Crater Lake is well worth the effort not only for the stunning views but cut new tracks on the 1000m vertical ride back down.
Wades Landing Lodge is situated 30 minutes from Mt. Ruapehu, making it a short drive to both ski fields. We can provide logistical support and can supply you with ski and snowboard equipment though our association with the One Stop Ski Shop in Owhango.

Defined by iwi (tribe), hapu (sub-tribe), and rohe (tribal area) Maori identify with geographical features of their area, with maunga (mountain) and awa or moana (river or lake) as a vital part of Whakapapa (genealogy) and history passed from generation to generation through traditions and legend.
Turoa Ski Field
Turoa offers an unparalleled winter experience for all. The high altitude and south west facing slopes means plenty of dry winter snow from July till September, and perfect corn snow in October. Turoa's terrain is nature's perfect terrain park.
The Alpine Meadow is a gentle, sheltered haven for the first timers, while on the upper mountain, tricky chutes and steeps abound to challenge the expert. The wide, open slopes of Turoa provide plenty of great cruising, while the formed Terrain Park gives riders a specially designed area to practice their tricks.
Whakapapa Ski Field
Whakapapa is New Zealand's largest and most developed ski area. Within the 600 acre boundary, there is a myriad of options that cater to everyone, from beginners to advanced skiers. There are plenty of marked trails but the back country skiing at Whakapapa is superb. Whakapapa Ski Area is located on the north-western slopes of Mt. Ruapehu and on a clear day has spectacular views across the central North Island.
Whakapapa is renowned for its world-class beginner facilities in Happy Valley. After recently being enlarged by a third, it has become a popular zone for first time ski and snowboarders with its wide gentle slopes.
