Tongariro Alpine Crossing
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is described as one of the best one-day treks in New Zealand, and is situated in the Tongariro National Park, New Zealand's oldest National Park with dual World Heritage status.
This status recognises the park's important Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as its outstanding volcanic features. You will walk across a lunar landscape of craters, scattered pumice, active volcanoes, mountain springs, lava flows, emerald lakes, piles of scoria, and statue-like mounds of volcanic rock. Allow 7-9 hours for the trek to cover such things as photo opportunities, lunch breaks and being side tracked.

Tongariro Crossing Side Tracks
Mt. Ngauruhoe Summit (2287 m)
Climb from the base of Mt. Ngauruhoe from the Mangatepopo Saddle and directly up to the crater. The best way is up the rocky ridge to the left of the scree slopes. If there have been signs of increased volcanic activity, the summit should be avoided. Allow 2 hours return.
Mt. Tongariro Summit (1967 m)
Climb from the Red Crater following the markers. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours return.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing in winter
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing can be done on a beautiful winter’s day. Weather on the Crossing is subject to Alpine conditions and can be extreme, particularly on the “Red Crater” ridge. We encounter snow, ice, and often strong winds. For you safety you must be accompanied by a person experienced in our mountains and be prepared with the correct clothing and alpine equipment.
Track Transport
Wades Landing Lodge will arrange a shuttle to and from the track. It is not secure to leave cars at the track ends. Transport to the Tongariro Crossing- $30 pp
